Report: Greenwich Borough v Thamesmead Town: Bostik South: Tues 11th April

A frustrating second-half from the Cannons saw Thamesmead Town take all three points from their visit to the DGS Stadium on Tuesday evening, as Jack Cronin reports.

Thamesmead began on the offensive, calling Greenwich shot-stopper Michael McEntegart into action
following a thunderous strike from Bode Anidugbe. However, Paul Barnes’ men quashed the early
pressure well and began to produce openings.

Travis Gregory (7) looked imposing for the Boro while Jack Barham (9) zipped around the final third
of the pitch, holding the ball up and searching for crosses to deliver deep into the opposition’s box.

The ball had a lot of air time in the opening exchanges with both teams struggling to develop passing
sequences in midfield. The first-half was a dogged affair played with tenacity, and chances presented
themselves for both sides.

Greenwich broke the deadlock on 49 minutes when Nassim Dukali (11) pounced on a defensive error
to scoop deliciously over Lewis Carey in the Thamesmead net, the goal was the injection that Boro
needed and they nearly made it two shortly after with Barham striking wide.

A breakdown in communication proved costly for Greenwich and Thamesmead reacted strongly. A
quick free-kick caught the Cannons by surprise and the away side took advantage with Danny Parish
firing home to make it 1-1 with 61 minutes played.

There were promising signs of a reply as the Boro passed and moved effectively; with Dukali, Barham
and Junior Aikhionbare exchanging quick one-touch passes to mould attacking opportunities down
the left-hand channel.

Visitors take advantage
Greenwich were stretched on the counter-attack and Thamesmead were the hungrier of the two
sides. Frustration grew in the Boro ranks and the visitors took the lead on 70 minutes through
Anidugbe’s strike.

Thamesmead maintained a rigid defensive until the final whistle and the Cannons struggled to pick
themselves up after going behind.

Manager Paul Barnes tweeted: “Soft goals and lack of desire and togetherness will only make for a
tough night and result.” He continued: “GBFC need a reaction and everyone to show the type of
characters I know we have.”

Despite back-to-back defeats, there’s no doubting the spirit in the Greenwich ranks and a promotion
place is still in sight. With their strength in character, the Boro can bounce back.
