Back to Winning Ways with Three Points at The Shepherd Neame

A late Power brace off the bench gives us a convincing scoreline.

Four games without a win is somewhat of a rarity as anyone who has followed The Borough this season will testify to. A mixture of injuries and squad rotation for the distractions of two cup competitions had conspired to three defeats and a draw for us as we headed to the Shepherd Neame Stadium looking to get back to winning ways.

Our opponents Faversham Town in 15th spot also looking to get back to winning ways having progressed through November without a win with five defeats and the one draw.

Three changes to the starting XI in the 2-0 home defeat to Carshalton the previous Saturday. The Gaffer finally getting a weekend off with his omission from the Teamsheet and Jerome Wade and Michael Power making way for Mohammed Eisa and Charlie Macdonald, the former two joining the returning Nathan Paul and Peter Sweeney on the bench alongside Amo Waritay.

Two early chances involving keeper spills at either end. Ex Borough keeper Ben Bridle Card unable to claim a high ball into his box when challenged by Rob Denness and Jake Britnell but the latter unable to steer the loose ball past the Faversham keeper as he gratefully smothered it at the second attempt.

Not the best of starts for us though as we fell behind just thirteen minutes into the game. A long Faversham throw from the right causing problems for Jordan Beeney (on loan from Charlton and deputising for Craig whilst he takes time to look after his new addition) Jordan getting under the throw and unable claim it. A headed clearance by George Pilbeam in the six yard box volleyed immediately back inside the right post from twelve yards by the Lillywhites Mobolaji Dowadu.

The Borough were back on level terms just eleven minutes later, Jake Britnell floored on the right wing, Mohammed Eisa’s freekick headed down and back across the goal by Rob Denness, Charlie Macdonald controlling the ball in the ensuing scramble to lift it to fullback Danny Young who headed home on the left post.

The Faversham defence fell foul of the Britnell pace just three minutes later as he was upended in the penalty area by Dan Carrington as he hesitated in the challenge and sent Jake flying over his outstretched leg, no hesitation from referee as he pointed to the spot. Charlie Macdonald dispatched the spot kick with his right inside the left post ahead of the diving Bridle-Card.
A solid first half performance ensured we went into the break a goal to the good.

Not unexpectedly the young Faversham side took the game to us from the outset of the second half and were back on level terms fifteen minutes into the second half. Another set piece as the lillywhites pacey no.7 Kieron Campbell looked to fly past Bradley Pritchard on the right wing drawing the resultant foul. The lofted free-kick was swung over and was deftly flicked on by the head of Josh Stanford at the front of a line of players leaving Jordan Beeney no chance as it dipped into the top left corner of his net.

The home side should really have got back in front as their number ten and the scorer of the opener nicked the ball of Danny Young at set sail towards goal with the defender giving chase, Dowadu turned the ball under outstretched right arm of Beeney and thankfully millimetres off target from eight yards.

With just under twenty minutes left the gaffer made a change that was to have an immediate impact introducing Michael Power in place of Jake Britnell. The big number ten was on the scoresheet a minute later as The Borough broke down the right as Faversham looked to make a change of their own. Michael Power with the simplest of touches at close range thanks to another pinpoint cross from Charlie Macdonald.

Jordan Casey replaced goalscorer Mobolaji Dowadu for the home side before the restart.

The Borough went further just six minutes later. Top goalscorer Robert Denness nipping in ahead of Bridle-Card to steer a Mohamed Eisa cross from the left over the keeper with a glancing header.

A nightmare last twenty minutes got a lot worse as the Lillywhites were reduced to ten men as Jordan Casey was given a straight red whilst play was stopped for an injury, his game lasting just nine minutes!

The Borough were not quite finished as they put the Lillywhites to the sword in the dying seconds of the game Lewis Spence grabbing possession in the left corner and making his way along the goal line with a deft step-over to wrong foot the defence before delivering a ball across the goalmouth to be met by Michael Power tapping home for his second and Borough’s fifth.

Back to winning ways in the league now with cup distractions out of the way and players returning from injury, a good away three points cementing our 4th position in the playoff spots with a six point cushion.

Who knows a more familiar run of form and we may be back on the tails of the league leaders very soon.
Come on the Borough!
