Ten man Borough come back from behind to win a place in the next round of the FA Cup
Greenwich Borough welcomed Zoe Smith, the Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist, to Princes Park for this FA Cup match against Lancing. After Zoe was presented to the two teams and posed for a team photo with the Borough the match started.
Greenwich very quickly found that things were not going according to the planned script as Lancing swept into an early lead as a seventh minute strike from 20 yards by Marcus Robertshaw was rocketed into the bottom corner of Craig Holloway's net. Borough then made things even more difficult for themselves when a rush of blood to the head saw Jamie Wood dismissed for retaliation to a challenge an event that took place under the nose of the referee. In the second half Lancing tended to sit back and defend their lead rather than press home their numerical advantage and Borough took the game to their visitors. However despite carving out a number of chances Borough appeared to have left their shooting boots behind as a number of efforts blazed high and wide. Finally in the 70th minute a Borough corner from the left was swung in to the far post by Chris Edwards where Gary Alexander rose high above everyone to head back across goal from 8 yards into the far top corner of the net. Within three minutes another corner from the left was met by Danny Young who rose above everyone at the far post to head back across the face of the goal to his central defensive partner Joe Vines who headed home emphatically. With Borough now in the lead Lancing started to throw numbers forward and created a number of half chances towards the end of the match but the Borough defenders were resolute and blocked everything that was goal bound.
Borough now face another home tie in the Preliminary Round when they face another Sussex side in St Francis Rangers who defeated Borough's near neighbours and SCEL rivals Erith Town by the same 2-1 score-line. This match will be played on SUNDAY 31st August as Dartford have a Vanarama Conference match at Princes Park on the Saturday.
