New Boys: Phoenix Sports

1 year ago By Greenwich Borough

We begin to look at the five new sides to face off against the Borough in the Bostik South next season.

Who are they?

Phoenix Sports are an football club based in Barneshurst, Greater London. The side, managed by Steven O’Boyle, were given their name following the destruction of the Blitz in World War Two as it was seen as rising from the ashes of the previous instalments of the club. They have spent most of their history in the Kent County Football League, and were accepted into the Kent Invicta League in 2011-12, finishing runners up. A series of promotions have seen them take part in the Ryman North for the last two seasons.

Last Season?

After a promising mid table finish in their debut Ryman North campaign, Phoenix Sports looked to capitalise and they started the season strongly, winning their first four games. They continued this form into October, only losing twice before a run of nine games without a win saw their promotion hopes take a hit. While they saw an excellent run of form between January and March, they ended the season with a run of four defeats on the bounce to finish 8th, four points away from the playoffs. However, despite the initial disappointment, they saw themselves build from the previous campaign and will look to take the next step this season, especially given the increased promotion spots available this term.

Familiar Names?
The side have a few names that will be familiar to the Borough faithful, especially in newly signed centre-back Danny Young who left the DGS Stadium following the conclusion of the season. O’Boyle was delighted to confirm the capture of the former Borough captain, who made 49 appearances last season, describing him as an “excellent centre half”. Borough fans will also recognise forward Michael Power, who made the move to Barnehurst last December, scoring 9 goals in the North division having netted 13 for the Borough before his move.

How to get there?
Via Car, it is a 20 minute journey. Taking the A2 to Bourne Road/A223 in Bexleyheath, take the exit for A220/A223 and continue on Bourne Road until you reach Phoenix Sports Club.

Via Public Transport, a walk to Eltham station would allow you to take the SouthEastern train to Dartford, exiting at Barnehurst before making the 15 minute walk to the ground.

Similarly, you could take the B16 bus from Eltham Hill Westhorne Avenue to Foresters Crescent before making the 15 minute walk to the ground.
