A solitary goal ensures its job done for The Borough

A sensational double save from McEntegart and a second half strike from Dembele enough to secure three points - Jack Cronin reports from The DGS Stadium

Jack Cronin Reports from The DGS Stadium:

A sensational double-save from Cannons goalkeeper Michael McEntegart helped Greenwich Borough maintain pressure at the top of the Bostik South division, as they defeated Faversham Town 1-0 at the DGS Stadium on Saturday.

The Boro’ were in a good position heading into the fixture, buoyed by an empathic 6-1 win away at Molesey FC earlier in the week; Paul Barnes’ men were eager to capitalise on a fine vein of scoring form and continue the goal-fest back at SE9. Greenwich drew 2-2 against the Lilywhites in this season’s reverse fixture, but nothing less than three points would have done here.

The match adopted some intensity early on as Omari Delgardo-Hibbert (10) and league top-scorer Jack Barham (9) looked to assert themselves in the Cannon’s frontline. However, the game struggled to find a rhythm as both teams sought to establish a grip on the proceedings.

Greenwich showed promise in the opening half-hour with Ryan King-Elliot (4) cutting in regularly down the right channel. King-Elliot continued to be a menace, however, clear-cut chances were few-and-far-between.

First half analysis would suggest a frustrating forty-five minutes for both sides, however the Cannons could take solace in some positive passing sequences and the prominence of King-Elliot and Kaka Dembele (20) in particular.

The second-half enjoyed a different tone, and Greenwich’s work-rate was clear from the offset. The game was played with a tempo of all the nuances of an exciting and physical encounter but it proved difficult to conjure shooting opportunities in crucial areas of the pitch. Delgardo-Hibbert showed his ability to stand the ball up and Barham was unselfish in his pursuit of an opener.

The Boro were patient and in the sixty-fifth minute chances started to present themselves with Barham missing narrowly past the post.
At the other end, Greenwich’s shot-stopper Michael McEntegart was called into action and produced a tremendous double save to deny Faversham a one-nil advantage. McEntegart’s emphatic work instilled vigour and belief into the home side, with the visitors struggling to breakdown the Boro’s defence thereafter.

Finally, in the seventy-second minute, Greenwich’s resilience paid dividends. An attack down the right channel saw Barham lay off to King-Elliot who delivered a low and fast ball across Faversham’s area for Dembele to fire home.

The match didn’t have the prettiest complexion and large periods were laborious for both sides. Faversham continued their search for an opening with fifteen minutes left, but the home team were more assured in the second half and despite some efforts from the opposition, the Boro stood firm.

Overall, an ugly but clinical performance from Greenwich Borough. They worked hard, quashed the opposition, and ultimately provided Faversham with a frustrating and disappointing afternoon’s work. Job done.
